Indonesian Muslim Leaders comdemn comments comparint women to "uncovered meat"

Salam/Peace:

TONY EASTLEY: While Sheikh Taj el Din al Hilali faces continued pressure at home, some senior leaders from within Indonesia's two largest Muslim organisations have also condemned his comments about women.

AJakarta Correspondent Geoff Thompson reports.

GEOFF THOMPSON: Between the two of them, Nahdlatul Ulama, or NU, and Muhammadiyah represent perhaps 60 million Indonesian Muslims. They are the largest Muslim organisations in Indonesia and perhaps the world.

Both groups support the idea of women modestly covering their heads and bodies but the strictness with which the rule is applied is a matter of constant internal debate between conservatives and moderates within the organisations.

Asking for his opinion on Sheikh Hilali's comments led to a suggested interview with Imam Adaruqudni (phonetic), who leads Muhammadiyah's policies on Islamic law. He says comparing women to uncovered meat is completely wrong.

ADARUQUDNI: But never does Muhammad said that the uncovered head of the woman will be the same price as the uncovered meat like that.

GEOFF THOMPSON: But you think referring to a woman, an uncovered woman as uncovered meat is a bit too strong?

ADARUQUDNI: Exactly yes.

GEOFF THOMPSON: That that's not good?

ADARUQUDNI: Not only not good but it is completely wrong. The prophet never said like that.
